The 1925 silent epic film version of Lew Wallace?s 1880 Ben-Hur: A Tale of the Christ hold more closely to the original novel, particularly in the ending. The 1959 film version Ben-Hur makes significant alterations. But its tone, operatic pacing (overture, entr?acte [intermezzo], and coda), and dialogue suggest this is still very much a film with a ?message.? Director William Wyler is perhaps better known today for the romantic comedy Roman Holiday (1953), which nevertheless has a bittersweet ending. The epic Ben-Hur is a very different directorial undertaking. In the 70 years since the original novel and quarter-century since the silent adaptation, how has the Ben-Hur story evolved by the 1959 full-color (Eastman color 65mm stock) version? [The 1925 version had made use of an early two-strip Technicolor process for some final segments.]
